SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has gained weight and could be suffering from health problems that develop obesity including high blood force Opposed Models of Style 2 diabetes an electronic mail told lawmakers on Monday.

The National Intelligence Service, South Korea’s main spy agency, said in a closed-door briefing to lawmakers on Monday that “Kim Jong Un weighed about 140 kilograms again and had been ballooning up’ as he belongs to the biggest group which is at high risk for heart disease,” Rep. Lee Seong Kweun told reporters.

Efforts to Manage Kim’s Health

The NIS briefed lawmakers that Kim was suspected of suffering from hypertension and diabetes since his early 30s, Lee said. Legislator Park Sunwon added: “The NIS believes that Kim Jong Un is obese because he continues to drink and smoke, and there has been a lot of tension in his stress.”

According to Lee and Park, the NIS had been quoted as claiming that it gained intelligence indicating that North Korean officials have attempted to procure fresh medications from overseas for Kim’s purported hypertension (blood pressure) and diabetes.

Kim has ruled over one of the most secretive countries in the world and it is difficult to verify what health state he may be suffering from. North Korean developments can be similarly glitchy, as shown by the NIS’ track record.

Kim is the subject of intense speculation outside North Korea, with no clear successor if Kim is unable to lead due to ill health. The country has an advancing nuclear arsenal that threatens US and ally countries such as South Korea.

The NIS also said in its Monday briefing that Kim’s young daughter, believed to be named Kim Ju Ae and is a preteen likely boosting her father’s air of succession. However, the NIS added that it could not exclude the possibility of one of Kim’s siblings taking over because he has yet to announce a chosen successor.
