Know Why Prince Harry Is Reluctance
Prince Harry is determined to protect Meghan Markle’s safety, which is why he’s hesitant to bring her back to the United Kingdom. The Duke of Sussex, who shares son Archie, 5, and daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana, 3, with Meghan, has valid reasons for his reluctance. Since their move to the United States in 2020, Meghan has only visited the UK a few times, most recently for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.
The Danger of British Tabloids
“It’s still dangerous,” Harry said in a recent ITV interview about the British tabloids’ coverage of their family. “All it takes is one person reading this stuff and acting on it.”
He added, “Whether it’s a knife or acid, these are genuine concerns for me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”
Legal Battles and Victory
Harry believes that anything he says about his family triggers a wave of abuse from the press, putting Meghan and their kids at risk. “They pushed me too far,” he explained, discussing why he took Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) to court in the UK. “It got to a point where you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. But I don’t think there’s anyone better suited to see this through than myself.”
Harry won his case against the publisher. Last year, a London High Court judge ruled that MGN had engaged in extensive phone hacking from 2006 to 2011 and likely hacked Harry’s devices “to a modest extent.” Earlier this year, MGN agreed to cover legal costs and damages, including an interim payment of around $505,000 for invading his privacy, according to his attorney David Sherborne.
Impact on Family Relationships
However, Harry’s battle with the British tabloids has strained his relationships, particularly with his father King Charles III and brother Prince William. He told ITV that the royal family’s unwillingness to push back against the tabloids is a “central piece” of their rift.

The Mission Continues
“I’ve made it clear that this needs to be addressed, and it would be nice if we did it as a family,” he shared. “From a service standpoint and in a public role, these are things we should be doing for the greater good.”
He concluded, “For me, the mission continues, but yes, it’s caused part of the rift.”
