John Wick 4 Sequel: ‘Under The High Table’ Brings New Thrills
Deadline has learned that Lionsgate is extending its John Wick universe under John Wick: Under The High Table, an action series executive produced by actor Keanu Reeves of the billion-dollar blockbuster franchise and director Chad Stahelski. Stahelski also intends to oversee the pilot episode.
Co-creator Robert Levine of The Old Man writes John Wick: The High Table, which picks up just after John Wick: 4 ends. While some of the franchise’s classic characters remain devoted to the old-world order, John Wick has left the High Table in a precarious state and a variety of new characters will attempt to establish themselves.
One of Peacock’s biggest original releases of 2023, John Wick: The High Table promises to “combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age,” so indicating a mix of newly created and existing characters, an approach Lionsgate previously used in the John Wick prequel limited series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, one of Peacock’s most recent releases.
Executive producing John Wick: The High Table through his business 87Eleven Entertainment is Stahelski, who in January signed a contract with Lionsgate to supervise creative on the John Wick series spanning film, TV, and other platforms. Along with Thunder Road’s Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk, who are movie producers, Levine, the showrunner, also executive produces alongside Reeves.
Reeves is attached as an executive producer right now, with no acting role. He is reportedly quite involved with the project, which is being shopped in what looks to be a competitive environment.
After John (Reeves) murders High Table’s Marquis (Bill Skarsgård), John and fellow killer Caine (Donnie Yen) earn their freedom from the High Table and Winston ( Ian McShane) gets reinstatement of Hotel Manager of the reconstructed New York Continental but is left seriously damaged. With John suspected but not officially dead, the finale is left open for interpretation; a post-credits sequence hints at a confrontation between Caine and Akira (Rina Sawayama). After Caine previously in the film killed her father, Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada) she hits him with a knife sparing her.
The extra scene might be a teaser for a John Wick spinoff film under development at Lionsgate on Yen’s Caine assassin character. Between the third and fourth John Wick films, the studio also plans a spinoff film Ballerina starring Ana de Armas.
According to insiders, there is a fifth John Wick movie under development as well; John Wick: The High Table won’t meddle with plans for a possible new feature release. Lionsgate refrained from commenting.
Apart from co-creating and executive producing Starz’s pirate thriller Black Sails, Levine co-created and executive produced FX’s The Old Man. WME and TFC Management repp him. WME and lawyer Tara Kole represent Stahelski.
