Funko‘s new video game “Funko Fusion” is expanding its roster of characters to include the employees of Dunder Mifflin.
Later this year, the newly released title from 10:10 Games will launch “The Office“-centric downloadable content, one of several planned updates coming to “Funko Fusion” following its Sept. 13 release across PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S.
The game is a co-op action title that mashes up characters from “Jurassic World,” “Back to the Future” and more beloved, largely NBCUniversal, IP into Funko Pop! format alongside hero Freddy Funko and his evil twin Eddy Funko.
“What the team has delivered feels like a wholly additive piece to ‘The Office,’” Funko vice president of licensing Jason Bischoff told Variety. “So without being specific around the execution in the hows and the whos, the way ‘The Office’ has found itself in-game feels not only organic to ‘Funko Fusion,’ in that maybe some of your favorite characters have a unique melee attack, ranged attack, or special ability, as all characters in-game do, but it also feels additive to ‘The Office.’ I should be clear what it isn’t. What it isn’t is, we found five looks for Dwight and now Recyclops is in the game for no reason. It’s not that. I’m not saying he isn’t in it! But what I am saying is time will play a part in what you’re going to discover from ‘The Office’ integration.”
“It’s one of those things where I want to be able to say everything but I know I can’t, only because we’re literally live in the middle of working on this stuff,” 10:10 games co-founder and head of publishing Arthur Parsons added. “So there are things that can still change. But I’m going to stop because otherwise I’ll say something.”
The news was announced out of “Funko Fusion’s” panel at New York Comic Con Friday, along with these reveals: online multiplayer mode will launch the week of Oct. 21 beginning with the “Jurassic World” portion of the game and followed by the “Hot Fuzz” level the following week; upcoming free downloadable content includes a “Jurassic World” bonus pack, “Monkey King” Sun Wukong as a playable character, and a “Back to the Future” outfits pack; and new paid DLC offerings are coming for “Invincible” characters and a pack featuring artist Bob Ross.
While “Funko Fusion” has already incorporated several characters and IPs outside of the NBCUniversal catalog, the game’s most prominent partner at the moment is the company that owns the TV and film rights to “Jurassic Park,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “Chucky,” and now “The Office.” But Bischoff assures Funko is still in talks with other Hollywood players that the brand already works with to create collectible figures based on their TV shows and movies to also turn those Funko Pop! figures into characters into “Funko Fusion.” He’s just not ready to name names yet.
“Yesterday alone, I had three licensors approach and say, we would love to be a part of this conversation… It’s lovely to be the belle of the ball,” Bischoff said.
