Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr wins Oscar Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer

At the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Robert Downey Jr., who played Oppenheimer, in Christopher Nolan’s historical drama about an atomic physicist, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor on his third attempt.

Downey’s first Oscar Triumph As Oscar Best Supporting Actor

In the film, which is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Cillian Murphy as the trailblazing atomic weapons physicist, Downey Jr. portrays Lewis Strauss, J Robert Oppenheimer’s opponent. After being nominated for Best Actor in 1993 for Chaplin and Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for Tropic Thunder, this is Downey’s first Oscar triumph.

The actor was the overwhelming favorite to win because he had previously won multiple key best-supporting accolades for the performance, including the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, and Bafta. But he had heavy competition, with Robert De Niro portraying Killers of the Flower Moon, Ryan Gosling playing Barbie, and Mark Ruffalo playing Poor Things.

Robert Downey Jr. hailed the virtues of his “awful upbringing and the Academy, in that order” and his “veterinarian, er, wife, Susan Downey”. She brought me back to life by giving me a grouchy rescue pet. It’s the reason I’m here.

He claimed that Downey Jr.’s “little secret” was that “I needed this job more than it needed me.” It has made me the better man I am standing in front of you.
