Diez magníficas (y un tanto olvidadas) candidatas al Oscar a l. a. mejor película para ver en plataformas | Premios Oscar | Cine

No son las que habitualmente recomiendan los algoritmos. Tampoco las que más recordamos cuando l. a. memoria nos lleva a los Oscar. Pero estuvieron ahí, en el quinteto ultimate, entre las aspirantes al premio a l. a. mejor película del año. Y aunque algunas de ellas ni siquiera aspiraron a rozarlo, pues las grandes favoritas eran otras, no dejan de ser magníficos ejemplares del mejor cine de cada época.

Puede que los más cinéfilos crean que algunos de los títulos de esta pieza no merezcan el calificativo de “un tanto olvidados”, o que prefieran otro cercano, del tipo “no demasiado conocidos”, y quizá lleven cierta razón. Pero a veces desatendemos el hecho de que las nuevas generaciones no vivieron su estreno, su éxito y su valoración en tiempo presente. Y aún más: que en ciertos casos su celebridad se debe a motivos ajenos a los galardones de Hollywood, y se sorprendan al saber que también formaron parte de su glamour, de su gloria y, por qué no, también de su negocio. De hecho, entre el grupo de seleccionadas, estamos seguros de que muchos descubrirán películas de las que jamás oyeron hablar.

Los gritos del silencio (1984), de Roland Joffé

Pocas películas han mostrado mejor el violento caos de las jornadas de revolución o de fin de contienda civil que degeneran en destrucción, asesinatos en masa y huidas despavoridas hacia los aeropuertos, las embajadas o hacia l. a. nada. En este caso, l. a. caída y toma de Phnom Penh, capital de Camboya, en 1975, por parte de los Jemeres Rojos, que posteriormente exterminaron a un tercio de su propia población en pos de un felony comunismo agrario. Como testigos, un grupo de periodistas y fotógrafos de guerra, comandados por Sydney Schanberg, corresponsal de The New York Instances, y su intérprete native. El debut como director de Joffé, que tras Los angeles misión (1986) se diluyó, fue impactante y ambicioso, pues abarcaba periodismo, política, historia y guerra, con una hermosa historia actual de amistad, y el sempiterno papel de EE UU en los derrocamientos de gobiernos o en el abandono a destiempo de países. Los angeles angustia de vivir (1954), de George Seaton

Los angeles vulnerabilidad del actor, por muy bueno que sea, y su refugio en el alcohol. El drama de haber perdido un hijo y l. a. imposible reconciliación con uno mismo a causa del accidente que provocó aquella muerte. Y l. a. obstinación por sentirse el ser más amable de l. a. tierra, cuando se está destruido por dentro. Al lado, más que enfrente, una mujer dispuesta a soportarlo todo porque ya no hay rendija hacia el futuro. Los angeles angustia de vivir proporcionó a Grace Kelly su único Oscar a l. a. mejor actriz, en un papel alejado de su routine belleza y glamur. Aquí, con gafas, pelo recogido y sin maquillaje, como una virgen dolorosa que todo lo soporta junto al también maravilloso Bing Crosby. Las bambalinas del teatro, el vozarrón de Crosby y l. a. energía de William Holden como tercer vértice del triángulo. Y un magnífico texto del dramaturgo Clifford Odets, adaptado por Seaton, que se llevó el segundo Oscar para l. a. película, de siete nominaciones. Lacking (Desaparecido) (1982), de Costa-Gavras

Otro caso actual como el de Los gritos del silencio, y con ciertos paralelismos: un golpe de estado, el de Augusto Pinochet y los suyos en Chile, el 11 de septiembre de 1973; el papel del gobierno de EE UU y de l. a. CIA en el derrocamiento del gobierno legítimo, y las muertes en masa de disidentes e inocentes. Contada por Costa-Gavras, especialista en cine político, a través de l. a. mirada estupefacta del padre de un joven escritor y periodista estadounidense desaparecido, que pasa de l. a. incredulidad y el individualismo a l. a. toma de conciencia política, Lacking no contenía l. a. palabra Chile, pero technology blanco y en botella. Jack Lemmon encarnó al prototipo de americano medio lejos de cualquier best, y el Estadio Nacional de Chile dejó de ser un campo de fútbol para convertirse en campo de concentración y muerte. El turista unintentional (1988), de Lawrence Kasdan

Una de esas aparentes películas pequeñas que, sin embargo, se mantienen grandes gracias a su compleja sencillez. Una comedia amarga de las que resulta casi imposible (y a l. a. vez, inservible) contar de qué van, porque en realidad tratan de todo. Más o menos así: un anodino escritor de guías de viajes para grises hombres de negocios (los turistas accidentales del título) arrastra l. a. traumática muerte de un hijo y l. a. consiguiente destrucción de su matrimonio, cuando se encuentra con l. a. mujer más espontánea en el momento más incierto. Kasdan (Fuego en el cuerpo, Reencuentro, Silverado…), de exultante carrera hasta que el brío clásico se le secó, adaptó un libro de Anne Tyler sobre un adicto a l. a. rutina que vislumbra una rendija a su desolación estando al lado de lo incierto de cada día. Cuatro nominaciones (con premio para Geena Davis como actriz de reparto), en el año en que Rain Guy ganó a Las amistades peligrosas y a Arde Mississippi. Disponible en Filmin.

Carta a tres esposas (1949), de Joseph Leo Mankiewicz

Tres mujeres reciben una carta de una amiga común en l. a. que les cube que se ha fugado con uno de sus maridos. Pocas sinopsis más atractivas para una película que luego pueda desarrollarse por los más variados géneros. Aunque quizá lo más llamativo es que las tres esposas del título estén convencidas de que el susodicho puede ser precisamente el suyo. Mankiewicz, fabuloso escritor además de director, teje una traviesa madeja de relaciones narrada desde el presente, pero con l. a. mente en el pasado y con visos de futuro. A cada flashback, el espectador vira en sus sospechas sobre quién es el marido elegido ya que, y eso concierne a l. a. masculinidad en common, todos pueden serlo. Afilada crítica sobre el aparentemente impoluto modo de vida americano, Carta a tres esposas se llevó dos de los Oscar más relevantes (dirección y guion), pero sucumbió en el de película ante l. a. también soberbia El político, de Robert Rossen. Raquel, Raquel (1968), de Paul Newman

El debut como director de Newman, que posteriormente legaría una obra aún mejor, l. a. ambitious El efecto de los rayos gamma sobre las margaritas (1972), le llevó a los Oscar gracias a cuatro nominaciones, entre ellas l. a. de su mujer, Joanne Woodward, que interpreta a una treintañera smart y tímida, acosada por una sociedad que l. a. ha masacrado desde niña. “¡Que te maten, estrafalaria / hija de l. a. funeraria!”, le cantaban los niños del barrio cuando technology pequeña. Ahora, desquiciada en cuanto sale de su reducto de seguridad, maleducada por una madre castradora y caprichosa, y reprimida exteriormente en cuanto al sexo pese a sus deseos interiores, es una maestra que apenas tiene una amiga en l. a. que confiar. Newman, con una puesta en escena muy expresiva, se luce con el montaje introduciendo desde flashbacks más tonales que explicativos hasta punzantes insertos con los pensamientos de l. a. protagonista, rompiendo con emoción el continuo secuencial. MASH (1970), de Robert Altman

Las modernas formas del Nuevo Hollywood, del que también formó parte en cuanto a estilo aquel Newman director, se empezaban a imponer en las candidaturas a los Oscar, y una comedia impensable solo unos años antes llegó para refrendarlo, metiéndose en un quinteto ultimate en el que resultó ganadora Patton. Aunque se ambientaba en l. a. anterior guerra para Estados Unidos, l. a. de Corea, viendo MASH en aquel tiempo solo se podía pensar en Vietnam, cuando parte de una generación de jóvenes marchó al país oriental para luchar contra el comunismo y volvió en un ataúd ataviado con l. a. bandera. Sin embargo, lo sorprendente de aquella película es que se reía con l. a. guerra (que no de l. a. guerra), a través de una poderosa crítica política y social, finalmente ganadora del Oscar de guion adaptado. Los angeles secuencia en l. a. que un cirujano pide a su enfermera que le rasque l. a. nariz a causa de un inoportuno picor mientras l. a. amputa l. a. pierna con una sierra a un soldado herido marca el tono casi suicida de una obra de inteligencia awesome. Donald Sutherland y Elliott Gould, con sus espontáneos modos de actuación, completaron un landscape de desfachatez no exento de negrura. Disponible en Filmin.

Los invasores (1941), de Michael Powell

Planteada en principio como una película de propaganda británica durante los primeros años de l. a. Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando Estados Unidos no había entrado aún en l. a. contienda y así impulsar su alistamiento entre los aliados, Los invasores va sin embargo mucho más allá, empezando por su singular planteamiento: los protagonistas son los nazis. Seis soldados alemanes, supervivientes de l. a. destrucción de su submarino en aguas del norte de Canadá (que sí estaba en guerra), intentando cruzar el país para llegar a unos EE UU aún neutrales. Huyendo en todo momento de los clichés, l. a. historia de Emeric Pressburger (ganadora del Oscar) presentaba un grupo diverso, con un evidente trasunto de Hitler al mando, pero con mucha miga y hasta valentía en ese momento: no todos los alemanes eran nazis. Powell, un maestro, realizó una película mucho más humanista y emocionante que ideológica, una unusual highway film con trayecto ethical, que se coló entre las mejores de un año de Oscar marcado por l. a. guerra (ganó Los angeles señora Miniver, otro melodrama bélico de propaganda). Como guinda, otros dos grandes nombres en sus departamentos artísticos: montaje de un joven David Lean, un año antes de debutar como director, y banda sonora de Ralph Vaughan Williams, el autor de l. a. memorable Fantasía Tallis. Gracias y favores (1983), de Bruce Beresford

Seguramente el título más conocido del australiano Beresford sea Paseando a Pass over Daisy, que technology un trabajo bonito, pero al que le perjudicó en el imaginario colectivo ganar el Oscar a l. a. mejor película por delante de Nacido el 4 de julio y El membership de los poetas muertos. Pero, a pesar de una filmografía muy desigual, las tiene tan buenas o mejores, sobre todo en su primera etapa, caso de Consejo de guerra y Crímenes del corazón. Aun así, l. a. que ha mantenido de forma más incuestionable su poderío visible y musical es esta historia de redención de una antigua estrella del nation, nominada a cinco premios, y ganadora de dos: actor, para Robert Duvall, y guion unique. Duvall, que también canta y escribió las letras de sus temas, se luce como alcohólico con pasado tortuoso que nada quiere volver a saber de l. a. música en público, y que se regenera a través de una extraña convivencia junto a una viuda de l. a. guerra de Vietnam y su pequeño hijo. Delicada y sombría en el internal de su relato, contrasta en su external por l. a. colorista belleza de l. a. fotografía de Russell Boyd, routine del cine de Peter Weir. Secretos y mentiras (1996), de Mike Leigh

Ahora que se ha estrenado en cines Mi única familia, l. a. última demostración de sabiduría del británico Leigh con su cine humanista, apegado a l. a. piel, al corazón y a las tripas, parece el mejor momento para recuperar o descubrir l. a. que para muchos es su obra maestra, Palma de Oro del Pageant de Cannes, con cinco candidaturas a los Oscar. Comedia dramática sobre las gracias y desgracias familiares, Secretos y mentiras adopta l. a. forma del agrio, afligido y a pesar de todo esperanzador retrato coral de seres humanos que parecen round por l. a. vida con una piedra a cuestas por culpa de l. a. incomunicación. Capaces, como cada uno de nosotros, de lo mejor y lo peor: “Así que l. a. vida no es justa, ¿verdad? Siempre hay alguien que saca l. a. pajita corta”.
