Charity Lawson Exposes ‘Toxic’ Bullying on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ Claims Racial Bias Influenced Outcome: ‘Far Worse Than Bachelor and Bachelorette

Charity Lawson Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles on ‘Sex, Lies and Spray Tans’

On her show ‘Sex, Lies and Spray Tans,’ former Bachelorette star Charity Lawson said that the mental toll of participating in some kind of public television dance competition as well as having all that makeup on your face with lights shining down at it for hours before you even take off has taken its toll over time.

Outstripping any physical discomfort one might have (and in my case for sure,) other people are competing around you too – alone on such ventures is not a word that was ever truly spokenCharity Lawson is on an episode of the ‘Sex, Lies and Spray Tans’ podcast talking about her mental health struggles.

The Mental Toll of Reality TV

She revealed Tuesday that she called for an on-site therapist while shooting Dancing with the Stars in 2018 after becoming overwhelmed by last season’s competition lethargy – as this Fall’s edition nears its release date.

“I didn’t think you guys don’t,” DWTS alum Cheryl Burke was told by the need for a therapist host “But I’m really surprised. Honestly, while Dancing with the Stars was great, with my mental health on that show I was quite literally going through hell and back.”

Burke remarked that she had previously suggested the idea of “a dance doctor,” but made it “TV friendly” did not come to fruition in this series.

Seeking Support

Lawson, even though she spoke to fellow Bachelorette and DWTS winner Kaitlyn Bristowe for advice, was still hit by the experience like Thornbury

On the score of the online hacking away she faced throughout such competition spotlighting her bum appearance, she then turned it around “on live television” — a

“Surprising? I don’t know, that was probably to be expected,” she pointed out.

Lawson said that she felt could handle the experience after undergoing criticism as she led The Bachelorette.

“I came into the Dancing With the Stars fanbase like, ‘This is going to be a piece of cake.’ I was almost to the point where it was so much worse than Bachelor and Bachelorette,” she said. “I was getting death threats for existing.”

When the journalist asked why she was receiving death threats, Lawson replied, “For not performing enough, for being conceited, for being entitled, for being the biggest b— on the cast. It’s crazy.”

She stated that the remarks on Dancing with the Stars were something she had discussed with Chigvintsev privately “but this is my first time speaking out about it.”

Dealing with Online Abuse

“It was so destructive, night after night,” she said. “I had to tell Artem, ‘This is what we’re facing up against and what we have to deal with.” If you compare my social media to any other competitor this season, they don’t have these types of comments underneath their photos and videos. Many times I’m not even doing anything in particular, I’m merely existing and the guys are calling me a bitch every chance they get.”

On her account, she revealed that she had “blocked and filtered” the comments, but on the show’s page, they were not filtered out.

PEOPLE’s request for comment was not immediately answered by ABC.

The Impact of Racism

At one point Lawson began crying while talking about the comments she received. She also says that she decided to speak out because “I have to go through this life as a Black woman on the reality TV show. The same things are just not protected.”?

Saying that she tried to keep the “best attitude” before things went downhill, she still struggled to make an impact in the competition.

Struggling to Stay Positive

“I had to push it down inside and finally it got to a head where I’m just fighting for existence,” she said. “I’m fighting to get through to the end of this season… There were weeks where I’d come back from rehearsal and it’s like, I hope to forget my steps finally get Voted Off… It’s a dark place.”

Misrepresentation in Media

In addition to this, she said that the show’s video packages did not help endear viewers.

“Where it was shown that I was being big-headed and boasting about the points I got but remember back to the camera guys made me talk about them!” she says. “That was very frustrating when I’d see the way my packages painted like this; it is more than just twisting viewers up into believing an opinion of me for one thing, ‘She is only interested in scores’ — ‘Oh, she believes she is better than everyone.’”

Reflecting on Her Experience

When this country singer was asked whether she believed her race was behind the results of Dancing of the Stars, she replied: “Yes.”
