Kino Lorber Acquires “Being Maria”

Kino Lorber has secured the North American distribution rights for Being Maria,” a compelling French film that delves into the complex legacy of Maria Schneider, particularly during her involvement in Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial film, “Last Tango in Paris.” This insightful film, directed by Jessica Palud, features Anamaria Vartolomei in the role of Maria Schneider and Matt Dillon portraying Marlon Brando.

“Being Maria” made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, where it stood out as the only film directed by a woman selected for the prestigious Premieres section. Currently, it is being showcased at the American French Film Festival at the Directors Guild of America, coinciding with a special tribute to Richard Lorber, the head of Kino Lorber.

At its core, “Being Maria” tells the story of the late actress Maria Schneider, who was thrust into the limelight as a young talent during the filming of “Last Tango in Paris.” Despite her potential, Schneider faced a harrowing experience on set, particularly during a controversial scene that she felt was exploitative. “Being Maria” is scheduled for a 2025 release, followed by digital and home video options. The film is co-written by Palud and Laurette Polmanss, based on Vanessa Schneider’s memoir, “My Cousin Maria Schneider.” Supporting cast members include Giuseppe Maggio, Yvan Attal, Céleste Brunnquell, and Marie Gillain.

The agreement for “Being Maria” was facilitated by Schwartz, who leads theatrical acquisitions at Kino Lorber, in collaboration with Studiocanal.
