The film, which also stars Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Beulah Koale, and Flying Lotus, will be released in 2025

A gruesome space mission puts the stranded inhabitants of an obscure planet to the ultimate trust test in the first trailer for Ash. The film, set for release in 2025, is the latest feature-length directorial effort from musician Flying Lotus, who stars in the film alongside Aaron Paul and Eiza González.

With a script from Jonni Remmler, the film follows Paul and González as Riya and Brion, two people on the planet Ash who aren’t too sure of each other but have found their fates intertwined. Riya wasn’t always on her own on the planet, which glows with a strange purple light. She initially arrived with a full crew of people, but woke to find them all slaughtered. Brion arrives to rescue Riya, the sole survivor of the shocking massacre, but soon they both find themselves fighting for their survival.

Ash also features appearances from Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, and Beulah Koale. Paul and González joined the cast in 2023 as replacements for Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who were attached to the film in 2022. In addition to directing Ash, Flying Lotus will also compose an original score to accompany the chilling story.

“We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames,” Flying Lotus said last yer, per Deadline. “They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.”

Flying Lotus made his feature directorial debut in 2017 with Kuso. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and imagined the aftermath of a horrific Los Angeles earthquake through the lens of body horror and twisted comedy.

“I spent so much time doubting myself and thinking myself into holes of un-productivity,” Flying Lotus told Rolling Stone in 2017 about the lead-up to Kuso. “I do believe there is something to be said for striking in that moment. The longer you sit on ideas, the easier it becomes to talk yourself out of pursuing them.”
